Headaches are fairly common when starting amlodipine.
They’re usually temporary and improve as your body adapts to the medication.
However, severe headaches accompanied by confusion, vision changes, or neurological symptoms should always be evaluated promptly.
5. Fast or Pounding Heartbeat (Palpitations)
Occasionally, people notice that their heart seems to beat faster or harder than usual.
This may occur because the body briefly responds to lowered blood pressure by increasing heart rate.
Most episodes are mild.
If your heartbeat becomes persistent, very rapid, or is accompanied by chest pain, fainting, or severe dizziness, seek medical care immediately.
6. Gum Overgrowth
One of the lesser-known side effects shown in the infographic is gum enlargement, also called gingival hyperplasia.

The gums may gradually become swollen, thickened, or begin covering part of the teeth.
Good brushing, flossing, and regular dental cleanings reduce the risk.
Tell your dentist and healthcare provider if you notice changes in your gums.
7. Fatigue
Some people simply feel more tired than usual after starting treatment.
This often improves as the body adjusts to lower blood pressure.
Persistent fatigue that interferes with daily activities deserves medical evaluation because many conditions—not just medication—can cause ongoing tiredness.
8. Nausea or Stomach Upset
Amlodipine occasionally causes:
- Nausea
- Mild stomach discomfort
- Indigestion
Taking the medication at the same time each day and following your healthcare provider’s instructions may help.
Persistent vomiting or severe abdominal pain should not be ignored.
