Homemade Mozzarella Sticks

Instructions:

  1. Unwrap mozzarella sticks and cut them in half. Place on a baking sheet and freeze for at least 1 hour.
  2. In a shallow bowl, combine breadcrumbs, Parmesan, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning.
  3. Place flour in another bowl and beaten eggs in a third bowl.
  4. Dredge each frozen cheese stick in flour, then dip in egg, then coat in breadcrumbs. Repeat the egg and breadcrumb step for a double coating.
  5. Return coated sticks to the freezer for 30 minutes to prevent cheese from leaking while frying.
  6. Heat oil in a deep skillet or fryer to 350°F (175°C). Fry mozzarella sticks in small batches for 1–2 minutes, until golden brown.
  7. Drain on paper towels and serve hot with marinara sauce.

Variations:

  • Swap mozzarella for pepper jack or cheddar for a cheesy twist.
  • Add cayenne pepper or chili flakes to the breadcrumb mix for a spicy kick.
  • Serve with ranch, garlic aioli, or spicy sriracha mayo instead of marinara.

Tips:

  • Freezing is key – don’t skip this step or the cheese will melt out during frying.
  • Work in small batches so the oil temperature stays steady.
  • For baked mozzarella sticks, spray lightly with cooking spray and bake at 400°F (200°C) for 8–10 minutes.
