Smoky Bacon Salisbury Steak

Instructions:

  1. Make the Steak Patties
In a large bowl, mix ground beef, chopped bacon, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Shape into 4 oval patties.
  2. Brown the Patties
Heat a skillet over medium heat. Cook patties 4–5 minutes per side until nicely browned. Remove and set aside.
  3. Make the Gravy
In the same skillet, add bacon drippings or butter. Sauté onions (and mushrooms if using) for 4–5 minutes until soft. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute.
  4. Add the Broth
Gradually add beef broth while whisking. Stir in smoked paprika. Simmer for 5–7 minutes until thickened.
  5. Finish Cooking the Steaks
Return patties to the skillet. Spoon gravy over top. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes until cooked through.
  6. Serve
Plate over mashed potatoes, spoon over plenty of gravy, and garnish with parsley if desired.

Variations :

  • Use ground turkey or pork for a lighter or different flavor profile.
  • Add a splash of cream to the gravy for extra richness.
  • Substitute caramelized shallots for the onion for a sweeter, more nuanced sauce.

Tips :

  • Don’t overwork the meat mixture—mix just until combined to keep the patties tender.
  • Deglaze the skillet with a splash of broth before adding the flour for even more flavor.
  • For extra texture, sear the mushrooms separately before adding them to the gravy.
