Sweet Tea Chicken Thighs

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl or zip-top bag, whisk together the sweet tea, soy sauce, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, minced garlic, salt, and pepper until the sugar dissolves.
  2. Add chicken thighs to the marinade and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight for maximum flavor.
  3. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  4. Remove the chicken from the marinade and pat the thighs dry with paper towels. Reserve 1/2 cup of the marinade for later use.
  5. In an oven-safe skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Sear the chicken skin-side down for 4–5 minutes until golden brown and crisp.
  6. Flip the chicken, pour the reserved marinade into the skillet, and add optional herb sprigs for extra aroma.
  7. Transfer the skillet to the oven and roast for 25–30 minutes, or until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) and the skin is deeply golden.
  8. Remove from oven and let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Variations :

  • Spicy-Sweet Twist: Add a dash of hot sauce or cayenne pepper to the marinade for a kick.
  • Grilled Version: Grill the marinated thighs over indirect heat, brushing with glaze for a smoky finish.
  • Boneless Option: Use boneless, skinless thighs or breasts and reduce cooking time slightly.
  • Herbaceous Flavor: Add fresh thyme, rosemary, or sage to the marinade for a fragrant boost.
  • Citrus Note: Include a splash of orange juice or lemon zest to brighten the flavor.

Tips :

  • Use strong brewed sweet tea—the deeper the flavor, the better the marinade.
  • Pat the chicken dry before searing to ensure crisp skin and proper caramelization.
  • Don’t discard the pan drippings! Simmer them down after baking to create a glossy, sweet-savory glaze for spooning over the chicken or sides.
  • Letting the chicken rest before slicing helps retain its juices and intensifies the flavor.
  • Serve with buttery mashed potatoes, cornbread, or roasted vegetables for a complete Southern-style meal.
