Instructions:
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
- Add warm milk, melted butter, and egg to the dry ingredients. Mix until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough by hand or with a stand mixer for 8–10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Add more flour if the dough is too sticky.
- Transfer the dough to a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a smooth ball.
- Place the rolls in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Cover loosely and let rise again for 30–45 minutes, until puffy.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake for 15–18 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown.
- Immediately brush warm rolls with melted butter, then let cool slightly before serving.
Variations
- Garlic Herb Rolls: Stir garlic powder and dried herbs into the melted butter before brushing.
- Cheesy Rolls: Mix shredded cheese into the dough or sprinkle on top before baking.
- Sweet Rolls: Add extra sugar and a touch of cinnamon for a sweeter version.
- Whole Wheat Rolls: Substitute half of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour for a heartier texture.
Tips
- Warm milk should be around 110°F—too hot will kill the yeast.
- Knead until the dough feels smooth and elastic; this ensures the rolls bake up fluffy.
- For a glossy finish, brush with beaten egg before baking instead of butter.
- To store, freeze the baked rolls and reheat in the oven before serving.
