Homemade Grape Juice (Canning Recipe)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare a boiling water bath canner and keep 7 quart jars hot until ready to fill.
  2. Wash the grapes thoroughly, removing all stems, leaves, and any damaged or underripe fruit.
  3. Fill each hot quart jar with approximately 3½ cups of grapes. For pint jars, use about 1¾ cups of grapes.
  4. Add 1 cup of granulated sugar to each quart jar (or ½ cup to each pint jar). Adjusting the sugar slightly for personal taste is acceptable, provided no other ingredients are changed.
  5. Carefully pour boiling water over the grapes, leaving ½-inch headspace.
  6. Remove any trapped air bubbles with a non-metallic utensil, adjust the headspace if needed, and wipe the jar rims clean.
  7. Apply the lids and screw bands until fingertip tight.
  8. Process the jars in a boiling water bath:
    • Pint jars: 10 minutes
    • Quart jars: 15 minutes
    • Adjust processing times according to your altitude if necessary.
  9. Carefully remove the jars and allow them to cool undisturbed for 12 to 24 hours. Verify that each lid has sealed properly before storing.
  10. Store the sealed jars in a cool, dark place for 6 to 8 weeks before opening to allow the grapes to fully infuse the juice.
  11. Before serving, strain the juice through a fine-mesh sieve or several layers of cheesecloth if desired. Chill well and serve over ice.

Variations

  • Use Niagara or Catawba grapes for a lighter-colored juice with a different flavor profile.
  • Blend Concord grapes with other juice grapes for a more complex taste.
  • Add a cinnamon stick or a small slice of fresh ginger when serving for a warm, spiced beverage.
  • Mix the finished juice with sparkling water for a refreshing homemade grape spritzer.
  • Use the strained juice as a base for homemade jelly, fruit punches, smoothies, or frozen popsicles.

Tips

  • Choose fully ripe, flavorful grapes for the sweetest, richest juice.
  • Remove all stems and damaged fruit before filling the jars to ensure the best quality.
  • The juice will naturally become clearer as it sits in the pantry and any sediment settles.
  • For the clearest juice, strain through several layers of cheesecloth before serving.
  • Shake or gently stir the juice before opening if desired, as natural sediment is normal.
  • Label each jar with the canning date and store in a cool, dark pantry for the best quality.
  • Once opened, refrigerate the juice and enjoy it within 7 to 10 days.
  • Save the strained grapes after juicing to make homemade grape jelly or fruit syrup if desired.
