Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) are a class of antidepressants that block the enzyme monoamine oxidase, which breaks down tyramine, a naturally occurring compound found in aged and fermented foods. When tyramine is not metabolized properly, it can cause dangerous spikes in blood pressure.
Foods high in tyramine include aged cheeses, cured meats, fermented soy products, and some alcoholic beverages like red wine and beer. Consuming these while on MAOIs can trigger hypertensive crises, characterized by severe headaches, rapid heart rate, and risk of stroke.
Patients prescribed MAOIs must adhere to strict dietary restrictions and be vigilant about avoiding high-tyramine foods. Medical supervision is essential to manage this interaction safely.
5. Alcohol and acetaminophen
Acetaminophen (paracetamol) is a widely used over-the-counter pain reliever and fever reducer. While safe at recommended doses, combining acetaminophen with alcohol can increase the risk of liver damage.
Alcohol induces liver enzymes that convert acetaminophen into toxic metabolites. Heavy or chronic alcohol use depletes glutathione, a protective substance that neutralizes these metabolites, increasing susceptibility to liver injury.
Patients who consume alcohol regularly should use acetaminophen cautiously and consult their healthcare provider about safe dosing. Avoiding alcohol during treatment with acetaminophen is advisable for those with existing liver conditions.
6. Leafy greens and blood pressure meds
Leafy greens like spinach and Swiss chard are high in potassium, a mineral that helps regulate blood pressure. Certain blood pressure medications, such as potassium-sparing diuretics (e.g., spironolactone) and ACE inhibitors, also increase potassium levels in the blood.
When combined with high intake of potassium-rich foods, these medications can cause hyperkalemia, a condition marked by dangerously high potassium levels. Symptoms include muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat, and in severe cases, cardiac arrest.
