1. Peripheral neuropathy
Peripheral neuropathy is a common and often serious cause of burning sensations in the feet. It occurs when the peripheral nerves, which carry signals between the brain, spinal cord, and the rest of the body, become damaged or dysfunctional. This condition can result from various underlying causes including diabetes, infections, autoimmune diseases, and exposure to toxins.
The hallmark of peripheral neuropathy is a burning, tingling, or numb sensation in the feet, often accompanied by weakness or loss of coordination. Symptoms typically start in the toes and gradually spread upward. If left untreated, peripheral neuropathy can lead to severe pain, loss of sensation, and increased risk of injury due to the inability to feel pain or temperature changes.
Diagnosis often involves nerve conduction studies and blood tests to determine the underlying cause. Treatment depends on addressing the root cause, such as controlling blood sugar in diabetic patients, alongside symptomatic relief through medications like anticonvulsants or antidepressants specifically used for neuropathic pain.
2. Poor circulation
Poor circulation, particularly peripheral artery disease (PAD), is another critical cause of burning feet. PAD occurs when narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to your limbs, causing ischemia and nerve irritation. This condition is especially common in smokers, people with diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol.
Burning foot sensations from poor circulation often worsen with activity and improve with rest. Additional symptoms might include cold feet, pale or bluish skin, slow-healing sores, and muscle cramps. Because PAD can lead to serious complications like non-healing ulcers and even amputation, early diagnosis with ankle-brachial index (ABI) testing and vascular imaging is essential.
Treatment focuses on lifestyle modifications such as smoking cessation and exercise, along with medications to improve blood flow and manage risk factors. In severe cases, procedures like angioplasty or bypass surgery may be necessary.
