5. Frequent Headaches or Migraines
People who get migraines tend to run lower in magnesium than people who don’t. It’s involved enough that the American Headache Society and American Academy of Neurology consider magnesium “probably effective” for migraine prevention — real enough to appear in actual treatment guidelines.
Not every migraine is a magnesium problem, but if you get them regularly it’s worth raising with your provider as part of the plan.
6. Muscle Twitches and Eye Twitching
That eyelid that flutters on its own for days — one of the most common early, visible signs. Same mechanism as the cramps: without enough magnesium to damp them, nerves fire more readily and small muscles twitch.

Usually harmless. But a persistent twitch alongside other items on this list is a data point.
7. Nausea and Loss of Appetite
As deficiency deepens, digestion can turn: nausea, occasional vomiting, appetite falling off. Vague and shared with countless other conditions — but in the context of the rest of this list, part of the picture.
8. Irritability, Anxiety, or Mood Changes
Magnesium regulates the nervous system and the stress response directly. Low levels are associated with:
- Irritability
- Anxiety
- Greater stress sensitivity
- Low mood
And it runs both ways — see #10.
