9. Muscle Weakness
Beyond cramping, low magnesium can leave muscles simply weak:
- Stairs feel harder
- Exercise capacity drops
- A general physically-drained feeling
- Weaker grip
Partly magnesium’s own role in muscle function, partly because low magnesium drags potassium down with it — and potassium is central to muscle strength.
10. Increased Stress and Muscle Tension — a Vicious Cycle
This is the loop worth understanding. Low magnesium makes you less able to handle stress. And stress makes your body dump magnesium — under stress you excrete more of it in urine.

So it feeds itself: stress burns magnesium, low magnesium worsens stress tolerance, and round it goes. Chronic stress is a genuine and underrated cause of deficiency, not just a symptom of it.
11. Abnormal Calcium and Potassium Levels
The technical one, and it’s why magnesium matters more than its own symptoms suggest. Magnesium is required to keep calcium and potassium properly balanced.
Severely depleted, it drags both out of line. Here’s the clinically important part: low potassium often can’t be corrected until the magnesium is fixed first. You can hand someone potassium and watch it fail to hold while their magnesium stays low. It’s exactly why doctors check magnesium when confronting electrolyte problems that won’t resolve.
