1. Your Home Has a Moisture Problem Somewhere
This is the headline cause, because it’s the one that makes all the others possible.
Silverfish congregate wherever damp collects: bathrooms, basements, laundry rooms, kitchens, crawl spaces, and anywhere plumbing leaks. High humidity is what lets them survive and multiply.
If you’re seeing them regularly, walk the house looking for:
- Leaking plumbing, even a slow drip under a sink
- Poor ventilation in bathrooms and laundry areas
- Condensation collecting around windows
- Damp or discolored patches on walls
- Hidden water damage behind cabinets or under flooring

A dehumidifier in the worst room, pulling humidity below 50 percent, is often the single most effective step — it removes the exact condition the insect depends on. A cheap hygrometer (a humidity gauge, a few dollars) tells you which rooms are actually the problem instead of guessing.
2. There’s a Food Source They’re Reaching
Silverfish don’t want your leftovers. They want starch and carbohydrates, which for them includes things you’d never think of as food:
- Paper, cardboard, and old books
- Wallpaper and its glue
- Flour, cereal, oats
- Pet food
- Clothing made from natural fibers like cotton and linen
Open pantry items and stacked paper are an all-you-can-eat supply. Move dry goods into airtight containers and clear out paper clutter — old newspapers, cardboard boxes, magazine piles — and you remove much of what’s feeding them.
