6. Hoarseness
Hoarseness or a change in voice can be an early sign of lung cancer when the tumor affects the recurrent laryngeal nerve, which controls the vocal cords. This nerve passes near the lungs and can be compressed or invaded by a tumor, leading to vocal cord paralysis.
Patients may notice a persistent raspy or breathy voice that does not improve over time. Since hoarseness can also result from infections or vocal strain, persistent symptoms need thorough evaluation.
7. Frequent lung infections
Lung cancer can cause repeated respiratory infections such as bronchitis or pneumonia. Tumor obstruction of an airway can lead to mucus buildup and bacterial growth, making infections more common and harder to clear.
If infections occur frequently in the same lung area or do not respond well to antibiotics, further investigation with imaging and possibly tissue biopsy is essential.
8. Fatigue
Fatigue with lung cancer is often caused by the cancer itself, anemia, or the body’s inflammatory response. It is a generalized tiredness that is not relieved by rest and can significantly impact daily life.
While fatigue is a common symptom of many illnesses, when combined with other lung cancer signs or risk factors, it should prompt medical evaluation.
