Problems with the hip joint, such as osteoarthritis or labral tears, can refer pain to the groin area. This referred pain often confuses patients and clinicians alike, delaying diagnosis. Hip joint pain typically presents as a deep, aching sensation aggravated by weight-bearing activities like walking or climbing stairs.
Osteoarthritis involves the gradual wearing down of cartilage, leading to joint stiffness and swelling. Labral tears, often resulting from trauma or repetitive motion, cause sharp groin pain and catching sensations in the hip.
Diagnosis relies on physical examination and imaging studies such as X-rays or MRI scans. Treatment ranges from physical therapy and anti-inflammatory medications to surgical interventions like hip arthroscopy or joint replacement in advanced cases.
4. Urinary tract infection
Though more common in women, urinary tract infections (UTIs) can cause groin pain in men, especially if the infection involves the bladder or prostate. Men with UTIs often report pain or burning during urination, frequent urges, and lower abdominal or groin discomfort.
UTIs in men require prompt medical attention because they may indicate underlying issues like prostate inflammation (prostatitis) or urinary obstruction. Urinalysis and urine cultures are essential for diagnosis, guiding effective antibiotic treatment.
Ignoring symptoms can lead to complications such as kidney infection or chronic prostatitis, increasing healthcare costs and recovery time.
5. Kidney stones
Kidney stones cause severe pain that frequently radiates to the groin as stones move through the urinary tract. This pain, known as renal colic, is typically sudden, intense, and cramping. It can be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and blood in the urine.
Diagnosis involves imaging studies such as non-contrast CT scans, which are the gold standard, or ultrasound. Treatment depends on stone size and location—smaller stones may pass spontaneously with hydration and pain management, while larger stones might require extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) or surgical removal.
Early diagnosis is crucial to prevent obstruction and kidney damage, which can lead to costly interventions.
